Steve is an active leader and volunteer in our community
Volunteer experience and Awards For most of Steve's adult life, community service has been an important part of how he defines himself. Giving back to the community is rewarding, and is something that BJ and Steve shares together.
IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Steve's first significant contribution was in the 1990’s when he volunteered for the IRS’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program. The program teaches its volunteers tax law and income tax return preparation so they could assist others. The culminating event was “Midnight Madness” where Steve provided assistance up until midnight of April 15.
Angel Flight West In 1998, BJ and Steve joined Angel Flight West, an organization that covers the western United States. For five years, they flew medical patients and family members to and from their medical appointments, and to some other special events, over the northwestern United States. They donated their time, airplane, and expenses. You can read about one particularly memorable flight here.
About a year after they joined Angel Flight West, BJ and Steve became the leaders of the Washington State volunteer organization. More on that here.
Media recognition and Awards for volunteerism Steve and BJ received some recognition for their volunteerism. They were featured on KIRO’s Evening Magazine, in a Seattle Times article, and on King 5, Q13, KOMO, and several other media publications. They received the Red Cross of King County Hero Award for the Medical Category, and were Angel Flight West’s Volunteers of the Year.
President of Lion's Club, San Juan Island After moving to San Juan Island, BJ and Steve joined the San Juan Lions Club. Last year, Steve received the President’s Award from the club. Steve has been on the board for a couple of years now, and is now the President of the club. Last year, Steve chaired the committee that produced the Club’s primary fundraising event, Friday Harbor Bike-n-Brew.
Other Volunteering In addition, Steve has volunteered for Island Rec and has volunteered at Friday Harbor High School coaching mock trial students, speaking to the students on constitutional law, and judging Senior Presentations.
